Sentimental Sunday - Fried Green Tomatoes

One of the things I miss from my childhood is momma making fried green tomatoes for breakfast. Summer wasn't summer until I had had them. I don't have them often any more, because 1) I've not had a garden in years and 2) although there are a few places around that will sell tomatoes to you green you really have to search for them. So, I'm usually asking friends to save me a few green tomatoes from their garden but I don't have alot of friends who garden anymore, either. Sigh.

So, one of my missions for this upcoming week, now that I've decided I have to have some fried green tomatoes, is to see if I can get to a farmer's market and hope that there are some green tomatoes amongst their offerings.

  1. I LOVE fried green tomatoes! The only time I ever get to have them is if a restaurant offers them. And I never had them for breakfast. I tried to make them once but I can never get them to look as pretty as those in the picture. My crust never seems to want to stick to the tomato!

  2. I love fried green tomatoes. There is one place in Branson, MO that has them on the menu year around. I've always wondered where they get their green tomatoes in the winter time.

  3. Ooooh, I am so with you! My Mama made the absolute best fried green tomatoes! I loved them! I haven't had them in such a long while... I may have to see if I can find some as well!
Mama also made a green tomato pie... kind of reminded you of a mince meat pie at Christmas. It was delish!

  4. I don't have a garden now either but we joined an urbarn garden. we subscribe quarterly and receive fresh vegetables in season grown right here in atlanta. unfortunately this has been a horrible year for tomatoes so we have hardly gotten any. so sad. real tomatoes are so good! Good luck finding green tomatoes this year!

  6. Green tomatoes are all I have on my plants. When they get red the chipmunk comes and eats them. He/she ate one half and then came back the next day and ate the rest. At least he did not waste the food.
Guess I will have to Google how to make then. I remember my mother making fried cucumbers, she sliced them very thin and dipped them in flour and fried them in vegetable oil till golden brown and drained them on paper towels. I would add salt and pepper to taste.
